The Japanese word beikoku translates as "America, United States, USA, United States of America" and is composed of the kanji  (read as "bei") meaning "rice, USA" and  (read as "koku") meaning "country". One also commonly sees America translated to katakana as amerika and less commonly the archaic kanji form amerika. Country names were originally translated to Japanese using a phonetic translation to kanji. These kanji were selected mainly for their pronunciation and not necessarily for their meaning. While it is now correct to use katakana for country names, this kanji translation is still in common use.
